ELQD ECIGS Vaping Guides September 2023: Battery safety! The do’s and don’ts of keeping your batteries healthy

When it comes to the use of external batteries in vaping mods there are a number of factors which you need to take into account when looking after the batteries!

Throughout this article we aim to explain the do’s and don’ts of using external batteries in a vaping device!

Battery Safety Tip 1: Check your wraps often

The main thing that we suggest to regularly check are the wraps, these are the sleeves that are around the actual metallic core of the battery, often these are made from plastics such as PVC and are there to prevent battery shorts when using two batteries in pair or when using a mod with a metallic body.

As a general rule of thumb if there is any damage to the wrap, no matter how minor you believe it is, replace your batteries, this will minimise the possibility of the batteries shorting out. Please NEVER let them get to the state shown in the image above, because that is an accident waiting to happen.

Battery Safety Tip 2: Never ever carry batteries loose

The number one cause of batteries discharging in peoples pockets are people who throw a pair of batteries in their pockets and think nothing of it, these batteries will then come into contact with something metallic, this could be anything from a set of keys, to some loose change, or even a fixing on the inside of their pocket and all of a sudden the batteries will discharge, leading to at bare minimum a nasty shock for the person involved or a full discharge in worst case scenario!

If you are transporting batteries in any case it is best to invest in some plastic battery cases such as these ones in the image below. At ELQD ECIGS, all the batteries which we sell in store come in their own plastic sleeve which is perfect for travelling.

Battery Safety Tip 3: Use a Drip Charger when possible

Drip charging batteries is a recommended practice because it allows for a gradual and controlled charging process, ensuring the longevity of your batteries. By using a drip charger, you can avoid the risk of overcharging, which can potentially lead to battery damage or even worse, an overheating incident. It is important to note that not all chargers are created equal. Investing in a quality drip charger from a trusted source like this one from our website ensures that you are getting a reliable and safe product. Additionally, it is crucial to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using any charger to ensure proper usage and minimize any potential risks.

Battery Safety Tip 4:  Always use married batteries

When replacing batteries in a dual battery vaping device it is always important that you replace both batteries at the same time and only to use those batteries together, once you start using a pair of batteries in a device those batteries become “married” meaning that they discharge at the same rate. If you were to change one of the batteries and not the other they will discharge at different rates, creating an imbalance & therefore reducing the amount of use that you will get out of a charge as well as increasing the rate at which both of those batteries will degrade. Meaning that you will have to replace them more often.

Battery Safety Tip 5: Don’t use mismatched batteries

Another tip for those using dual battery vaping devices is not to used mismatched batteries, always use the same model of batteries from the same manufacturer. This is for the same reason that you only use married batteries, if the batteries are of different manufacturers or models they may have different discharge rates, different milli-Amp hours (mAh) and using batteries with differences in these values may lead to an increase in the rate at which those batteries will degrade, leading to you having to replace them more often.

In conclusion, battery safety is a paramount concern for vapers everywhere. The proper handling and maintenance of batteries are essential to prevent accidents and ensure optimal performance. Always use the correct batteries for your device and inspect them regularly for any signs of damage. Never leave batteries unattended while charging and avoid overcharging them to protect against fire hazards. Proper storage in a cool, dry place is also crucial to avoid potential short circuits. By adhering to these guidelines, you can vape with confidence knowing that you’ve taken the necessary steps to keep yourself safe and prolong the life of your batteries
